1. B-17G 42-31473 "My Baby", 20th BS/2nd BG, flown by 2nd Lt. Robert O. McCloskey.*

2. Bf 109G-6AS, W.Nr. (?),
"White 6",
flown by Uffz. Willi Reschke, of I/JG 302, Mrtitz, 29 August 1944.

August 29th 1944.

On 29th August 1944 I/JG 302 was once again scrambled against the approaching formations of the 8th Air Force heavy bombers. Flying as the leading wave of the German attack force the Gruppe met the enemy bombers over Linz. Willi Reschke was flying in the first wave, attacking from the rear. He saw his fire hitting the B-17, at first the rear turret, and then wandering to the wing root and the inner engine. The bomber, unable to continue with the rest of the formation, soon began to fall out. At that moment Reschke became aware of one of his fellow pilots flying behind him and firing, tracers passing ominously close to his own plane. Moments later several hard blows convinced Reschke he had indeed been hit by one of his own pilots. The controls became sluggish and his Me 109 was flying nose-heavy. Reschke first thought of bailing out but remained in his damaged 109, which steadily lost altitude. In the end he made a succesful belly landing near Ungarisch-Brod in the Banor area of Moravia. He was never able to find out who of his comrades was responsible of 'shooting him down'.
Reschke's victim on that day, it appears, was the B-17G 42-31473 "My Baby" flown by 2nd Lt. Robert O. McCloskey. It was Reschke's 14th aerial victory. The subsequent fate of the crew of the B-17 "My Baby" remains unknown to me.

* The information conserning McCloskey's B-17 was discovered by pure chance while I was roaming the internet in a desperate search for Reshcke's victim on the 29th August 1944. The information was found at Flight Sim Files under a b-17 skin pack by simec. I could hardly believe my luck of being able to actually track down the unfortunate b-17. It got better, I made a visit to wings palette com and even found a profile of this b-17G. It's slightly different of the version by simec - some markings varied and colors were different. My version is somewhat a combination of the two versions. Had I not been able to find the information, this twin pack idea would not have come to exist, or at least would have taken a different turn regarding the backround story.
